I'm wondering, are there owners who dont check their oil every few fill ups? There are oil consumption issues and if the motor is run with the oil 3 qts or so low there will be excess piston/ring/cylinder wear due to the low level. Unlike the lifters, bearings, rockers, etc. that are fed via oil galleys and oil pressure...the pistons are lubricated by oil splashing onto the cylinder bores from under the pistons through the oil rings and if the motor is run low enough there is not much reaching where it needs to.
I can't imagine owning a car, any car, and not checking oil on a regular basis but I'm in my mid 50's and come from the do-it-yourself generation (as well as 35 years of building race & performance engines).
You may have a faulty baffel under your valley cover that is allowing excess oil into the PCV system. The catch can (a good effective one like the Elite, Mike Norris, RX) will trap this before it causes issues in the intake and combustion chambers, but it sounds like you have a deeper issue.
