I've got 26K on my L99, and it only burns the small amount that ends up in the catch can. I've never had to add any between oil changes.
As far as being worried about them tearing into the engine, I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. As long as they do it right and fix your problem, you're getting a fresh TBO (time between overhauls) at their expense.
