I had a 2010 Buick LaCrosse for awhile with the LF1 in it (which was specifically to get a jump on the next generation ECMs coming from GM) and I showed it to a local company that builds headers and exhaust systems and the owner started swearing up a storm, realizing he wouldn't be able to sell headers to vehicle owners with engines of this design.
My guess is that it is either an emissions issue, cost savings issue (or both). It is weird seeing a downpipe bolted right to the side of a cylinder head, though!

It is definitely a cost savings. Apparently Lotus started it and Honda is planning on introducting one in either 2012 or 2013. What I like is it does leave room in the engine bay for turbos. What I don't like is you don't get to do headers if you want to stay NA. I guess there's always porting and a bigger downpipe though?!?
