I know that in California, in order to void your warranty, the dealer has to prove that what you did caused the problem. Let's say for example you replaced the gears in the rear and your stereo stops working... and the dealer says sorry you voided your warranty by placing aftermarket gears in the car therefore your entire warranty is void... They have to prove that the gears stopped the stereo from working. That is an extreme case of course but it has been known to happen. Basically they burden of proof is on the dealer to prove what you did caused the failure. So be careful, if you mod your motor and it blows up, even while driving under normal conditions... chances are they wont cover it.
EDIT: At least that's the way I understand it.
