the simple explanation:
the lower gear ratios (4.10 & 3.73) are better for acceleration.
the higher gear ratios (3.45 & 3.27) are better for top speed & economy.
what the numbers mean:
if you have a 3.73 differential, the drive shaft has to turn 3.73 times to turn the axle
once. the proper way to write it is 3.73:1, but it's assumed that you mean ':1' so we leave it off
