Most Automatics are faster when the computer does the shifting. The paddle shifters (for most of today's automatics) are to add excitement and give the driver more control.
But at the drag strip, letting the computer do the shifting will most likely prove to be faster.
And for playing around on the street, the paddle shifters will add some excitement.
