Took my car into my GM service center. Talked with the performance sercive department manager and his best vette and 2010-2011 camaro tech. Took them for a ride to let them hear the popping noise in the rear end.
First off, they were AMAZED at how loud the popping was and both instantly said it was the outer CV joints popping. Their discription was about what has been said on here. The axles binding up and twisting which preloads the CV joints and then when things release, you get the pop.
They seemed more concerned then many on this thread. They asked if it had gotten any worse since the diff was installed. In all honesty, it has gotten worse over since it was installed. Not dramatically so but it pops more often now then it did at first. I would not say its any louder, just more frequent.
I asked them if anything was going to break and both said it was unlikely that under normal driving conditions that anything would break but that eventually, the CV joints would wear to the point that I would hear this popping noise even at higher speed, mild turning. Not acceptable.
I asked them what the fix was and they gave me two options:
1. Replace the factory parts(which I do not have) to convert the rear end back to the factory limited slip system. They said this should solve the popping noise for sure but that if there was CV joint damage there may still be some popping noise at times which would require moving to option 2.
2. Install upgraded axles and see if that solves the problem. Again, may be needed anyway if the factory CV joints are damaged. If I have to replace the axles might as well upgrade them.
They were going to work up an estimate to convert the rear end back to the factory limited slip system so I guess I will find out tomorrow what the cost of each option would be and go from there.........
