My service center told me 6-8 hours labor to convert the diff back to the factory limited slip unit. Sounds like ALOT to me but thats what they quoted.
They only quoted three hours of labor to install new axles and they said it may be less then that. Probably going to go that way.
They had the car all morning to look over the factory axles and when I picked the car up the service manager explained what they found. In their opinion, the factory axles on my camaro were quite sloppy from the factory to begin with and then when we installed the JRE diff., trailing arms and stiffer bushings, it exaggerated the problem and since there was no where else that would give, the loose CV joints reared their ugly head.
He also said that had we known that the warrantee would have covered the axle replacements but with the new rear end upgrade, they could not prove the CV joints were like this from the start so as I expected, no warrantee coverage, was not expecting any.
He said that the DSS 1400 HP axles would likely solve this problem, at least the popping of the CV joints as they are made to handle these types of stresses much better then the factory axles.
Guess that is the way I will go. If I had good factory axles I would probably just convert the rear end back to factory specs but these loose CV joints have me a bit worried once I put on the supercharger. Would rather replace them now then break them later and take the chance of breaking even more parts in the process.
On an interesting note, they had a 2011 camaro they had just installed 4.11 gears and an upgraded Diff with posi unit upgrade as well. They did not say hows posi unit it was. Other then that the car was a factory LS3 2SS. The customer was starting to prep this car for a strip car project. They let me take it for a spin and there was NO CV joint popping of any kind. Lots of wheel sliding but no popping. If I can get rid of the popping I will be happy because I love the traction of the JRE rear end.
Those 4.11s sure get you out of the hole fast!!! But that car hit red line very fast as well. I think I would hit the rev limiter ALOT with that car even just playing around. Hell, I do it now from time to time with my L99 A6. THis was a manual trans and I think I would get sick of shifting in town as much as needed with the 4.11 gears. My 3.73 are about perfect in my A6 for what I am looking to do. Just showed me how the CV joints should sound.
I guess now I get to order some fancy new DSS axles!!! Not a bad thing but was hoping to put more into the SC investment right now. Just have to back that up a bit longer now. I guess its better to correct the loose CV joints before adding more power to the car!!
