I taught my son to drive on a 6 speed when he was 16. He prefers a manual now. My clutch (and car) survived. I think that his car would also survive.

One thing to remember is that for the SS models, there is higher horsepower with the manual than the automatic. Not so with the V-6 when they are both the same.

At least Camaro (unlike the Challenger and the Pontiac G-8) gives you the 6 speed standard and charges extra for the automatic, which is a much more complicated piece of machinery then a manual transmission.

I agree that performance is not a consideration (except for the SS per above). I will probably get a 6 speed, but it is because I am old school and just like going through the gears.
