Modified stock intake tube?

I am building my own cold air ... pretty crafty person and I am saving up for a cam so I dont want to spend the money on one yet! SO I got a cone filter for free, and I am building a heat sheild box with sheet metal and weather striping. My question is about the stock tube... the big box thing with the plastic vent tube in it hanging of the side( resonators )? I take it that is for sound control and emissions, would it be worth it to remove that and block the hole and remount that little vent tube? Any suggestions... I will post picks when I am done, going to start working on it this weekend! I am also going to do a back to back test at the track with the stock box at the track. Wish me luck!
