Also in a lot of base cars like the V6 Camaro and the V6 Mustang (in the past at least), they tend to get less than stellar manual trannys. They tend to be weaker and a lot of times they tend to be hard, if not impossible to shift once you start upping the power!

If the OP wants to do bracket racing then most likely he'd already have the answer.
And, yes shifting at higher RPM's (5+k) manual shifting has proven to be a PITA. It's really, unfortunate that the automakers don't fix the issue which is simply applying a larger flowing master cylinder and / or ensuring the syncro rings are dependable.
