Florida is the lightning capital of the United States, and my dog is having a mental breakdown from the daily thunderstorms.
And don't even start with the hurricanes. The roof was blown off our family business (total loss) during Hurricane Charley in 2004. Then we had more roof damage to our house and lots of trees blown during Wilma.
But I do understand what you're saying. I lived in Oklahoma for a long time and storm chased for fun. A plains/midwest supercell is a beautiful sight to see. I'm a big time weather enthusiast and science teacher.
And I'm serious, my dog is having a major issue dealing with the daily thunderstorms in my area (S.W. Forida).

Understand the dog and thunderstorm problem,my pit bull (RIP) was like a nervous wreck when it came to storms. And this is suppose to be an *agressive dog*...ha! We would give him those *calm* pills they sell at Petco..it helped a little. We ended up keeping him in a room with the tv on....very loud.
The german shepherd I have now...storms/firecrackers...don't bother him ..go figure.
