The last sports car I bought used ('04 Z06 CE) drove me crazy. Every creak, moan and groan drove me crazy. I would be blasting through the gears and hear a creak, or squeal and get out of it, turn the radio down listening for ???? I am anal about my car's and that isn't something I ever want to go through again.

Now if it isn't going to be a DD and more of a play toy, then get the Z06, if it is something you are going to want to keep for a while, I'd get the ZL1.

It is hard to beat the look of either car. They are both in their own class as far as styling and wow factor. Everyone isn't going to know the difference between the Z06 and a regular Corvette, but even fewer are going to know the difference between the ZL1 and "Just an SS" Camaro.

You can get a 500 hp used Corvette that may have the crappy "used" warranty or remained or the factory warranty for a couple of days, or you can get the ZL1 and have 5 years /100k miles to not worry about it.
This reminds me of the past four years of ownership with my 1997 Z28. A car isn't much fun when half the time spent driving is trying to diagnose a problem or find a squeak or rattle. This seems to be the general feeling with most 4th gen f-body guys I know.

Not to mention, when something breaks, your on your own and repairs could be costly. A warranty is a nice thing to have, especially 5 yr/100,00 miles. I would feel a lot more comfortable knowing as well that I was purchasing a brand new vehicle with no previous owners. That used Z06 is going to have some hard miles on it.

All of that being said, if I were in your position and considering a purchase close to or above $50k, no Camaro would be in the running. I would probably opt for a new Grand Sport or base C6, still have a long powertrain warranty and a brand new vehicle, and then just start modding whenever I was comfortable with doing so. If I had to pick from your two options, and it wasn't to be a DD, definitely the Z06.
