You've never bought a new car or spent any serious time in a dealer looking at cars I assume?
Dealer fees vary in what they actually include. They are intended to still maintain a profit margin on a vehicle when sold even if you do haggle down the price. Typically the biggest thing that is covered in dealer fees is documentation and paper pushing. Other BS things could include any time of dealer prep (wash/wax) or whatever else they can sneak into the sale and charge you for. Bottom line, dealer fee is nothing but pure profit on your sale to help keep that dealer in business.
I dont know how it is in other states, but virtually all dealers in FL charge a dealers fee.
Dealer fees can be negotiated, but just be on your game and make sure that whatever $ amount you talk off the price, that is isnt moved and tagged onto somewhere else in the sale....especially if you are doing a trade in.
Basically, the best advice is to go in and know exactly what you want to spend including tax, tag/title (commonly known as "out the door") and stick to your guns. I cant tell you how many times Ive gotten up and walked out in the middle of a salesman talking to me after he came back with any sort of dollar amount over what I am willing to spend and have driven to the next dealership.
Use that edmunds link I posted above. You can sit there and play with numbers all day long and know exactly where you need to be BEFORE you step a foot inside a dealership and get suckered into spending more money than you wanted.
