After driving a manual for a while it becomes like second nature when it comes to shifting. I never worry anymore about what gear I need to be in going into a turn its just becomes automatic. I also used to be freaked out about hills myself when I first started driving stick. The second or third time out I was in a 1990 Jetta driving through SF, now that was scary. After a couple weeks of driving though you get completely comfortable with it and you will be happy with your decision, it is so much more fun. The only time manuals suck is when you are living in LA and have to sit through hours and hours of traffic... ugh.
