I thought about leaving the top of the radio section curved like the first prototype, but with the clarion that was used in that particular kit, the screen distance was very deep, and stuck out past the curve. Most other double dins are VERY shallow in this spot, and wont stick out past the curve. This is why the face that the double din sticks out of has to be relatively flat. Take the pic below:

The black line represents the curve of the prototype kit. The Red lines are MOST double dins, and the green lines are the Clarion headunit. If the curve was left in place, the radio would sit behind the dash panel.

I had a similar problem with Rick Bottoms Gen 2 kit that was at SEMA a few years ago (I think it was SEMA 2009?). He had a Kenwood unit, and when the kit was built for him I did not have the radio. I used the same design as I used for the Clarion head unit, and when I saw it at the show, the middle section of the radio was behind the dash piece
