Stepped headers increase in size, for example 1 3/4" to 1 7/8". This doesn't have anything to do with the clearance.
As far as clearance with our headers, we tuck them up as close to the body as we can. You will find that no one has issues with our headers unless they try driving over a boulder (in which case they have a lot of other things to worry about
).
