Most of the towels I have purchased prior to Adam's towels have FAILED the CD test. Many of those that don't scratch have other issues like excessive linting, which also makes them useless for drying or final wiping.
If you don't see the damage on the CD, then maybe you won't "see" the damage on your paint, in which case, wipe away with your $0.50 towel. Better yet, if you are confident that your cheap towel is safe, wash and dry your car. Then, take your Costco towel and rub it back and forth in the same spot 50 times, roughly simulating how many times you would wipe that spot if you dried your car with it every week for a year.
Then, park it in the direct sunlight or inspect it with a shoplight up close. Have Kleenex nearby when the tears commence.
