Plants used to be set up to run "similar" models based on the same platform, (Oshawa Car Plant used to run Chevy Impala & Monte Carlo, Buick Regal, Pontiac Grand Prix, Oshawa Truck used to run Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra). The Oshawa Plant was refitted to be a "Flex" Plant, meaning that multiple platforms could be run in one plant with minimal change over.

On the Gen 6, that's a good question. Used to be that plants would actually bid on making the car. Don't know if GM is still making the plants do that or not.
