After looking through some other threads related to the steering wheel and/or service stabilitrak message I found some more info. The steering wheel angle sensor is connected to the clockspring (the clockspring is the part which has the steering wheel buttons connector as well as the airbag wires). When I replaced the steering wheel I accidentally turned it one turn to the right before putting the steering wheel back on .

When I drove the car the sensor would measure that I was turning the wheel past the maximum and it would throw up the error. I didnt know what side I turned it to so I turned it in each direction until the error would show. I took the wheel back off and turned the clockspring in the opposite direction one turn and everything was good to go after I put it all back together.
