You can't even trust cashiers checks. I know a guy who was selling his Durango and the buyer brought a cashiers check. He went to the local bank with it and because it was late could only have it verified through the drive up window. The bank teller said it looked good. So he goes back and makes the deal. The next day he tries to deposit the check in the bank lobby. The teller asks him to wait a minute. Meanwhile she called the cops who show up and attempt to arrest him for passing a bad check. So he files a stolen car report. I don't recall if his insurance covered the theft. But he eventually got the truck back because the guy who stole it sold it to some lady in the next state over. When she attempted to register the vehicle the VIN was flagged as being stolen.
As for cash, I would take it to a bank and have them scan it for counterfeit bills.
