The only bitterness is for the people who join the military to only get a free education and benefits and are totally shocked when they are called upon to defend their country. There were plenty of those in Desert Shield/Storm which if you will recall was an all volunteer, no draft involved, service. Believe me I didn't want to be there either but it was a possibility from the day I joined. There are great benefits to being in any of the US armed forces. I recommend it to any young man or woman. I just try to stress to anyone I know who is considering joining, that defending their country is their number one job. That is historically what a military is for. With luck they will never have to serve that role in anything other than continuous training readiness and they can serve their time and enjoy all those perks and training from an enjoyable duty assignment. Would you tell anyone who is joining any different? If so you must be the recruiter from Private Benjamin.
