I did the same but with satin black. I took them off, cleaned them really good and then layed them out. I did not sand them BTW. I did a coat of adhesion promotor on each and let it dry for a few minutes. Then repeated two more times. Once they were completely dry, wait about 10 mins, I sprayed them with the paint. I waited about 5 mins between each coat, I did it in the sun so they dried fast. I did about 4 light coats. If you can still see the chrome, give it some more coats since you probably sprayed too lightly. I did not use a clear coat, no need with the adhesion promotor. It sticks and holds good.
