I've had my Cobalt for a year and a half now (I know, not so long term) and so far no problems. I had a rattle that worried me, but it turned out to be the Ipod FM transmitter and phone charger tapping against each other in the glove box. It is more affordable than the Corolla, and the gas mileage is more competitive than the EPA ratings would suggest. Driving responsibly and gently, I am easily able to beat even the old estimates. The nice thing about the Cobalt is it is easier to get it configured the way you want versus the Corolla. In my experience, I saw a greater variety of option combinations and trim lines on dealer lots for the Cobalt than I did for the Corolla. Another thing I like about the Cobalt is the oil filter. It is a new canister type, so it is a little harder to change yourself (but that is still definitely an option) and if you have it done for you it will cost an extra couple bucks more than an oil change would cost on a car with a normal filter, but it lets you easily go 7,000 miles between changes, more than making up for the cost in the long run. I drive my Cobalt 60-80 miles a day, and it works just fine for my needs right now, which are the same as yours: cheap, reliable, and fuel efficient. So I'm not saying anything against the other choices. They are just fine for what you need too, but I can personally vouch for the Cobalt's abilities. Go give them all a careful look.
