Be happy with the one who treats you right. You deserve that. And don't allow yourself to get sucked in by the "hard life" excuses. Alcoholism is one of the few diseases you actually have a choice in, and though he's trying to straighten out, and seems to be making the right choices now, the damage your ex has done is already there. He didn't make the right choice back when he should have. Your family wants to protect you, and it's doubtful the ex will ever be able to make amends enough to change their minds.
