Direct injection increases the efficiency of the process. This can be expressed in 2 ways: increasing power or increasing fuel economy. Its always a compromise, I'm sure the V6 could have been 30 mpg if they cut the power back a bit. I think GM will work towards improving fuel economy of the V8's more than power. In the grand scheme of things, 500 hp is getting excessive for low cost cars, particularly when fuel economy is becoming more and more important than raw power.
