Critters want 3 things... shelter, food, and water. Take away their close proximity to each other and viola... NO CRITTERS.
In my experience, what mice want most is a warm engine. They like the winter daily driver for that reason, and a couple of years ago, they ate the injector wire harness on the daily driver for that reason.

Hence the poison distributed around the garage now. The result? Several dead mice in the garage every year.

When I retire, I will replace the poison with a cat.
