I got the same message about 2 months ago. I took it back to the dealer... they had to add 4.5 qrts to get it back to normal. I had 4000 miles on my oil... no signs of using, leaks etc. The dealer also told me that GM said 1 to 1.5 qrts every 3k miles is normal consumption... i think that is absolutely ridiculous... the old cars in 60's didn't consume oil like that.
Anyway... GM is doing an oil analysis where i have to take my car back every 1k miles so they can check it and add if needed.... this is required for purposes of tearing into the motor if no leaks are found and the consumption is continuing.
