The weights in question come pre-installed on the calipers, they are not added to the caliper on the assembly line. They are there to reduce vibration and brake squeal. You will only find these weights on vehicles equipped with the 14" discs, and there should always be 16 little lead weights attached to the caliper.

In addition, should you disassemble your Camaro, you will notice another similar weight installed on the rear roof bow. The exception is that this particular weight weighs in excess of two pounds - its purpose is to reduce vibration through the roof at speed.

At the time of this writing, all vehicles with the 14" discs have these weights attached to the caliper. Including those that are still sitting on the assembly line. I would not expect this to stop any time soon, as I am sure you would not want loud brake squeals when coming to a stop in your nice shiny Camaro.
Thanks for registering to give us a response for this thread I guess this means all of the Camaro's will and should have these weights on them and there are no plans to change the look anytime soon.

Furthermore there is a similar weight installed on the rear roof bow which weighs two pounds and is there to reduce vibrations as well. Very interesting indeed.

It sounds like there are no fixed calipers since they have already "fixed" them with the weights. Disappointing if you ask me.
