Bumleb, this may explain why the starter was so hot - although the electrical short could do this too. I would be interested to find out the temperature of that ring around the starter after the exhaust gets hot...if the ring also becomes hot; I would start wtih insulating the starter from the heat shield and fashion a bracket/heat sleeve to keep the cables away from contacting the starter or the engine block
