If it's a manual, does a picture of a shift pattern come up on the cluster when this happens? Your car will prevent you from going from 1st to 2nd or 3rd in certain low load low throttle input situations. It took me awhile to get used to this when I first got mine. By holding first gear a little longer you will bypass the point at which the skipshift solenoid engages. As far as I know, the only blocking solenoids on the trans that are controlled by the ecm are reverse, and the solenoid that locks out 2nd and 3rd. I don't think the ecm can lock you out of 5th as there is no solenoid to do so. So to avoid the forced 1 to 4 by the computer, you can change how you drive, or install a slp skip shift eliminator.
