the C4 didn't have to meet the same crash safety standards that the 5th gen Camaro will have to meet... the C5 and C6 both have similar body lines to the C4, but both of them have side filler doors for the same reason that the Camaro will get one... and the Lambo and Audi have almost completely unusable trunks, not to mention price tags well north of what the average Camaro buyer wants to pay.
bottom line: be passionate about the car, but dont be disappointed if the filler door is on the passenger side fender, because that is where its going to be on the production car.
I find it amazing that my post was actually typed before Scott's, but it said almost the same thing... had I posted it when I actually typed it, and not answered the phone before hitting "add reply", it would have been before his... lol
