Looking at the pivot point you have established, how are you getting the top of the grille to close up completely once the unit is rotated back down? Are you using a limiter switch to limit the travel of the motor in both directions? Or are you using a momentary dual-polarity switch to accomplish it kinda manually? How about all the other stuff that's underneath where the speaker used to be? Did you remove anything else?
I would really like to do this myself - I have the exact same GPS unit, and haven't decided on a good location for it yet.

I measured the height from the top of the a/c duct to the speaker grille to bend the ribbon steel to the right height. To be safe, there is a 1/8" gap in the back to clear the pivot point.
No limiter switch, I am using a DPDT center off switch for the up/down movement. I was thinking of using little pegs to establish a physical lower limit.
I completely gutted the speaker cavity. It was really tough and time consuming, especially with my battery powered rotary tool.
