The reason why anyone should want higher speed rated tires is the car will be more stable and capable of emergency evasive manuvers at real highway speeds (75~85 MPH) with a 130+ MPH rated "Perfomance" tire than it will with a 118 MPH rated "Touring" tires.
It's not that I want to go as fast as the "tire speed rating", it's that I want to be at a lower percentage of the tires maximum speed capacity when at normal highway speeds ...
"Y" rated performance tire (186 MPH) is at 46% of it's speed rating @ 85 MPH
vs.
"W" rated performance tire (168 MPH) is at 51% of it's speed rating @ 85 MPH
vs.
"V" rated performance tire (149 MPH) is at 57% of it's speed rating @ 85 MPH
vs.
"H" rated performance tire (130 MPH) is at 65% of it's speed rating @ 85 MPH
vs.
"T" rated touring tire (118 MPH) is at 72% of it's speed rating at 85 MPH
"H" is the minimum speed rating I try to find for any tire purchase, however some tire sizes are hard to find even with this rating.
