I feel sick to my stomach just reading your story. I'm very sorry, man. You are right, however. It is definitely mostly on the dealership, but that dealership has the GM name, and thus should be managed to certain expectations/standards by GM (as all dealerships should, but are not).

I understand about not wanting to spend money on a law suit, but please don't stop at this forum. Definitely go to your state's Better Business Bureau, State Attorney General, and even your local news.
