The reliability of the engine is very questionable. I've heard countless stories of owners pulling the engines and installing other engines, many times LS engines, in their place. Most have said they just couldn't put up with the maintenance and horrible reliability anymore, especially with the turbo versions.

Just because burning oil in the piston realm is a negative thing doesn't mean it is for a rotary. Piston engines burn oil as they wear. Rotaries do to lubricate the engine. Big deal, you need to add a quart or less every now and then.
But yes, the increased maintenance requirements make it more likely that people will create problems for themselves due to neglected ownership duties. We can agree on that much.
