The other problem is that most 16 year olds (I said MOST there) have never known anyone their age who was killed or died from a disease or anything like that and they have not yet developed any sense of mortality. It's just a plain fact that they think that they can do stupid things and won't get hurt.
I was once 16 and I remember what it was like.
