Not the same car but my wifes X-3 BMW also did better on the lower octane gas. And it was the dealerships mechanic who told her it would do better with the lower octane. We drove from MASS to Florida, going down we used 93, coming back up we used 87. And it came out to around 4-5 miles per gallon better with the 87.
