Too many people, especially teenagers think a good or skilled driver means being able to drive fast; that couldn't be any further from the truth. Just because you can mash a gas pedal to the floor with your foot doesn't make you a "good" driver; any knucklehead can do that. Just because you can weave around cars going faster than they are doesn't make you a good driver either.
Being a good, skilled driver begins with your mental attitude. It's not just understanding what your machine can do, or what you can and can't do with it. It's understanding WHEN, where and why you raise or decrease the performance level. Even on a racetrack, even though you're trying to win the race or your class, there are still "rules of the road" which race drivers obey.
"Good" drivers; genuine good drivers use good judgement and wisdom ALL THE TIME to avoid collisions and there's no way to count the innumerable times a good driver has prevented a collision because THEY were paying attention while some other idiot wasn't. But the idiot gets to drive home in safety too because the good driver made it possible.
That's the difference between a genuine good driver and everybody else; the good drivers are paying attention and know what to do and when. Being a good driver is about wisdom and choice; not just going fast.
