Would the people that would actually be swayed not to buy the ford by such an event more than likely be on the line about it already and be equally moved to buy it if it won?
You obviously didn't read my post carefully because I didn't say Ford would not benefit from winning head to head. HOWEVER, they would benefit no more from winning the head to head than they would from just posting a faster official lap time.

The benefit Ford would see from winning in a head to head comparison on the 'ring is the same benefit they would see by posting a faster official lap time than zl1. By not accepting the challenge they control whether or not the gt500 actually posts an official time. If it posts a faster time, they advertise that and gain. If it posts a slower time, they never reveal the time and see no negative impact from it. If they were to go head to head, if the gt500 posted a faster lap time it would benefit them no more than a faster official lap time, but losing in head to head would be far more negative than just never posting an official lap time because they couldn't beat it. There is NO benefit to Ford accepting the challenge because they only add risk while seeing no increase in potential reward.
