Headers that have a 3" collector will be paired with a HF cat (or off-road pipe) that is a 3" inlet and a 2.5" outlet. This is so that they will fit the stock cat-back which has a 2.5" inlet.

As well, most cat-backs come with a 2.5" inlet even if it is a 3" cat-back. The Magnaflow 3" cat-back is that way exactly. It has a small 2.5" inlet (for about 4") but then expands to 3". There are only a couple Header/Cat-back setups that are true 3" all the way through. Most have at least a 2.5" drop down where the HF cats and cat-back connect up. No big deal....unless you running maybe over 700 rwhp or so you'll never know/see/feel the difference.

Here is a pic of a HF cat. Notice the inlet if larger than the outlet.
