Ok, Mike...... While I totally had flashbacks while I was just spinning that wheel
................ I did spin it both ways and tried suddenly stopping and going the other direction and all and it made no weird noises.
If the noise is in fact coming from the diff then it's manifesting way out at the end of the axle and none at the diff.
