Problem with your dump the clutch method is hoping you can hook! At the track I doubt the Camaro is going to hook on street tires dumping the clutch at 5K! Test and Tune day, it might even be questionable on Drag Radials... The kind of "advantage" you are talking about is probably only going to happen with:
1) Drag Radials, maybe slicks... definitely not street tires!
2) Possibly suspension mods
3) Very well prepped track...
That's the beauty of AWD... I don't need those things! For example, I went out to Lapeer yesterday... so you know it was not well prepped! LOL! Had a 2.01 60' against a C5 Vette that had a 2.20 60'. I had a 1.95 60' against a 79 Z28 (manual tranny with sticky tires..) that had a 2.03 60'. I beat both cars while I was on ALL SEASON RADIALS, not even SUMMER tires!!! LOL!
So while I might not see a huge time advantage with my 2.0x, the AWD let me pull those times very consistently regardless of track condition and on cheap old ALL SEASON tires! At a minimum it makes me competitive against cars that normally would appear to be a lot faster!

You must have misread my post. . .
"A manual
with awd can dump the clutch at 5k and come out of the hole like a banshee"
"That's not to say it's a poor launch compared to cars in general, but not nearly the launch advantage offered with a manual. "
Here I am talking about the launch advantage an awd manual car offers over a rwd car being much greater than the advantage an auto awd car offers.
I'm just saying there is a lot less to fear in the launch racing an awd car with a stock auto (not stalled) vs racing an awd car with a manual.
