The Vette's don't have a 4.03 first gear.
I'm a Vette man as well so I'm with ya.
And it is primarily because of emissions and fuel economy. But yeah...imagine the average housewife, who's never driven a car with any kind of power to speak of, getting behind the wheel of 580hp with a 4.03 first gear and a 2.36 second gear then dropping the hammer like she's in a minivan or Suburban. Think I would like to ride in the backseat and just kill myself laughing.
