If you look at them again, check closely they are probably not in the same position if you measure their depth. The firing order should be 18436572, which means when no. 1 is at top dead center (TDC) so is no. 6. The difference being that one of them is TDC compression and the other is TDC exhaust. No. 8 with 5, 4 with 7, 3 with 2. The depths of those pairs should be indentical. Usually when the head gaskets are blown you can actually see it on the gasket when the heads are removed.
