I always find a curb space somewhere away from the entrance. This guarantees you can at least protect one side of the car. When you hug the curb you also provide ample space between your car and anyone that parks next to you to eliminate the accidental "wind caught my door when I opened it" scenario. The only thing that is irritating with that is when someone figures out what you have done and then parks on the line close to you in order to give themselves ample space on the other side of their car, crowding yours in the process. That really grinds my gears. That's why I park far away on a curb because human nature tends to dictate that most people don't want to walk all the way across the parking lot to enter an establishment when there are available spaces closer to the door. So far, my Mustang has been ding-free since 1991.
