Auto will get better MPG, unless you know how to milk it out of a stick. The variable cylinder will boost your city driving up a few MPG. If you need to throw the car around the curves, rally style, you have the TapShift to play with, which I actually prefer over a short throw. Its much more like racing an Indy Car at that point. There is something to say about the 'feel' of jamming a short throw into gear though. Its much more satisfying.
