If you drive the manual correctly and handle the gears you can actually get better mileage with a manual transmission because you can control every shift point from start to stop. The feeling of jerkiness goes away when you learn the feeling of the clutch (if your talking about being a passenger then the guy driving just sucks).

I'm the same way. I want to hit the gas and go. Plus will be a lot quicker than having to worry about shifting. I just don't find it fun.
