When the alternator is charging the battery, 14.5 or so would be normal. With today's cars, if the battery is charged enough and the alternator is not immediately needed, the computer may just shut the alternator down while cruising and let it run on the battery by itself (it's a fuel economy thing). About 12.5 would be the battery by itself.
