Well, at least on the M6 the boot snaps down in to the console. So, technically it's attached to the console but it just snaps in. My guess is that the A6 bood does the same so the console is probably the same between them.
Edit: Take a look at the above pics. The actual boot is connected to the gray trim ring that has the shift pattern in it. To take it off you use your finger to grab the edge of the gray trim ring via the boot and then pull up. It just snaps/un-snaps into the console.
